Usually people seem to like problems that are above their level but I have difficulties believing this problem poses any problems to most people. Why does everyone like it so much?

I don't think it's a chess puzzle, due to the stupid logic of white giving black the game by moving to g1 - any decent player would take the black knight with his rook, and if black uses rook to take the white rook, white will take the rook with his king.

Stupid logic? White get's mated if he recaptures the Knight with the Rook. For example: 1... Nxg2 2. Rxg2? Qxh3+ 3. Kg1 Qxg2#
