Chess Problem #40
Black to Move

White to Move

Problem #14
2. Qd2 is the wrong response by White. Much better is 2. Bc3, and now if Black plays 3. BxN then White simply responds BxB, winning the exchanges. Black must now capture the Bishop on c3, followed by 3. ... NxB 4. RxN NxR 5. QxN and Black has a Rook and two pawns for a Knight and Bishop. An alternative continuation for Black after the initial 1. ... N(f)xg4+ 2. hxg4 would be simply 2. ... Nxg4+, winning the Rook next move for the Knight. The material gain is even both ways, but with less simplification (the white squared bishops will stay on the board).
My previous analysis is not correct. If White plays 2. Bc3, then Black will respond with 2. ... Nxc3+!! and White can now resign, as his Knight on h5 and his pinned Rook will fall in the next two moves. This will only work, however, if Black makes the initial capture with the Knight on f6, and not the one on e5.
Tajek, you must mean 2. Bf3 not Bc3. The square c3 is occupied by white's knight.
